Business School Health and Safety

Lone working

As far as possible, we advise students to avoid lone working. However, if you find yourself working alone in a room within the Business School, it is important for your own safety that someone knows where you are – you could let a member of staff, or a friend know. If you have a mobile phone, keep it to hand. Know where the nearest exits are in the building and report any incidents or problems to the Facilities Assistants on reception.

Fire safety

You will need to familiarise yourself with the School’s fire evacuation procedures – these are posted around the School on blue signs. In brief, these are:

  • On hearing the fire alarm, please calmly leave the building via the nearest exit – you should know your quickest escape route prior to an emergency.
  • Once outside the building, everyone should report to the fire assembly point, which is located at the far side of the staff car park, next to the Charles Thackrah building.
  • Please do not re-enter the building until it has been declared safe by University safety staff.

If you suspect a fire, break the fire alarm glass at the nearest point. Leave the building via the nearest exit. Contact the Security Office on 0113 343 2222 and state the location and nature of the fire.

Food and drink

Food and drink are not permitted in any teaching room or in the computer cluster. Any student found with food or drinks in the lecture theatres, teaching rooms or clusters will be asked to leave.

Mobile phones

You are requested not to take or make calls on mobiles within classrooms, teaching situations, the computer cluster or administrative offices.

Smoke free campus

The University is committed to the health and wellbeing of our students, staff and visitors. As part of this, a new smoking policy was introduced from August 2019 to take steps towards being a smoke free campus, this includes e-cigarettes.
